Itineraries: underground Naples

The secrets, the stories and legends of Naples still echo in its cavities. It is from the time of the Ancient Greeks that Naples is digged to the bone for the construction of ancient water channels and for digging out tufa, a rock of volcanic origin out of which most of the Neapolitan historical buildings were made.

This continuous digging operation has provoked wide cavities in the subsoil which in time have been used as shelters during World War I and II, but also as secret gathering rooms or as the charnel house of the Cimitery of the Fontanelle.

The guided tours start from Piazza S. Gaetano in the centre of Naples and from Vico S. Anna di Palazzo at the Spanish Quarters.
